Discover the Magic of Humantay Lake on a Full-Day Adventure with Inca Rail

Inca Rail launches full-day Humantay Lake tour from Cusco, featuring a 7km hike to a turquoise glacial lake at 4,200m. The $53 package includes transportation, meals, guides, and entrance fees, with departures available through 2025.

-- Inca Rail has launched a full-day tour taking visitors from Cusco to Humantay Lake, a glacial formation with turquoise waters situated at 4,200 meters above sea level. The lake rests at the base of Mount Humantay (5,473m) in the Vilcabamba mountain range, near the Salkantay peak (6,271m).

The 12-hour excursion begins with hotel pickup in Cusco between 4:00 and 4:30 AM. Travelers proceed on a 2.5-3 hour drive to Mollepata village for breakfast before continuing to Soraypampa (3,900m), where the hiking portion begins. The early departure allows visitors to reach the lake during optimal morning lighting conditions, which enhance the vibrant turquoise color of the water against the mountain backdrop.

From Soraypampa, participants complete a 7-kilometer round-trip hike through Andean terrain. The climb to the lake takes 1.5-2 hours, varying with group pace. The trail winds through high-altitude vegetation zones characteristic of the Vilcabamba region, offering views of the surrounding valleys and peaks throughout the ascent.

At Humantay Lake, visitors have approximately one hour to view the scenery, photograph the glacial waters, and observe the natural amphitheater formed by the surrounding mountains. The lake's position at the base of Mount Humantay creates a natural reflection of the snow-capped peak in its waters when conditions are favorable.

The package includes bilingual guides (Spanish/English), private minivan transportation, breakfast and a buffet lunch in Mollepata featuring local Andean cuisine, entrance tickets, and safety equipment including first-aid supplies and emergency oxygen. Guides are trained in high-altitude first response and carry satellite phones for emergency communication in remote areas. The tour returns to Cusco between 5:45 and 6:00 PM with drop-off at central locations.

Inca Rail suggests participants spend several days adjusting to the altitude before attempting this hike, which presents moderate to challenging conditions with a 300-meter elevation gain over steep sections. The company recommends a minimum of 48 hours of acclimatization in Cusco prior to the tour. Recommended items include layered clothing for variable mountain weather, sturdy hiking footwear, sun protection with high SPF due to increased UV exposure at altitude, and at least 1.5 liters of water per person.

Priced from USD 53 per person, the Humantay Lake tour maintains small groups (maximum 15 people) and is available for bookings until December 31, 2025. The tour operates year-round, though weather conditions vary seasonally, with the dry season (May to October) offering more reliable hiking conditions.
